The ancient capital of the Mughal Emperor for 10 years, Fatehpur Sikri, is undoubtedly one of the popular tourist attractions in Agra. The Mughal emperor Akbar (reigned 1556–1605 CE) established the “city of victory” as his capital, and it was built between 1571 and 1573. Fatehpur Sikri was the first planned city of the Mughals, distinguished by spectacular civic, residential, and religious structures, including palaces, mosques, and housing quarters for the king’s court, soldiers, and servants.
The Mughal emperors continued to visit Fatehpur Sikri on occasion after shifting the capital to Lahore in 1585.
