One of the popular tourist attractions in Jaipur, as well as one of the most well-known forts in Rajasthan, is the Amer Fort, located in Amber, 11 kilometers from Jaipur. Before Jaipur became the state capital, Amer served in that role. Raja Man Singh constructed the fort in 1592, and later, Raja Jai Singh I renovated it. Also known as Amer Palace, your Jaipur sightseeing tour is incomplete without visiting this mesmerizing red sandstone and marble fort, which looks even more special beside the Maotha Lake.
Despite its fairly decrepit exterior, the fort is magnificently preserved inside. It comprises four distinct sections, each with its entrance. The primary entrance is the “Suraj Pol” or Sun Gate, which opens onto the main courtyard. One of the four courtyards is called the “Jaleb Chowk.” The “Sila Devi” Temple lies at the entrance to the main palace grounds. The second courtyard houses prominent features such as the “Diwan-i-Aam” (Public Audience Hall), the “Sheesh Mahal,” and the “Sukh Mahal,” where the marble fresco known as the “Magic Flower” is a well-known attraction.
Despite invasions, Amer Fort has stood strong without destruction, preserving many old structures and relics—an interesting fact about this impressive monument. A must-visit site in Jaipur tourism, it’s an integral part of the Golden Triangle Circuit Tour, and a perfect addition to your itinerary when visiting Jaipur and exploring the wonders of Ranthambore National Park.
Amer Fort was built by Raja Man Singh and additions were later made by Sawai Jai Singh.
